Family of Flemish painters. Pieter Brueghel
(c. 1525-69) was one of the greatest artists
of his time. He painted satirical and
humorous pictures of peasant life, many of
which include symbolic details illustrating
folly and inhumanity, and a series of Months,
(five survive), including Hunters in the Snow
(Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna). The elder
Pieter was nicknamed `Peasant' Brueghel. Two
of his sons were painters. Pieter Brueghel
the Younger (1564-1638), called `Hell'
Brueghel, specialized in religious subjects,
and another son, Jan Brueghel (1568-1625),
called `Velvet' Brueghel, painted flowers,
land- and seascapes.
