  1. Family of Flemish painters. Pieter Brueghel
  2. (c. 1525-69) was one of the greatest artists
  3. of his time. He painted satirical and
  4. humorous pictures of peasant life, many of
  5. which include symbolic details illustrating
  6. folly and inhumanity, and a series of Months,
  7. (five survive), including Hunters in the Snow
  8. (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna). The elder
  9. Pieter was nicknamed `Peasant' Brueghel. Two
  10. of his sons were painters. Pieter Brueghel
  11. the Younger (1564-1638), called `Hell'
  12. Brueghel, specialized in religious subjects,
  13. and another son, Jan Brueghel (1568-1625),
  14. called `Velvet' Brueghel, painted flowers,
  15. land- and seascapes.
